A hat is a great winter accessory that helps to keep you warm and comfy. In this video tutorial, I am going to teach you how to knit a simple hexagon wool hat.
The yarn I am using for this hat is made of 100% super wash merino wool, I like super wash wool because you can throw them into the washing machine without worrying too much about felting, how convenient is that!
When making a hat, the most difficult part is achieving perfect fit for your head. It’s very important to measure gauge, you don’t want to knit a hat that’s too tight or slouchy. Honestly, I’ve been intimated by hat knitting for years because I didn’t know how to properly re-adjust a hat pattern to fit my own size. In this tutorial, we’re going to focus on achieving a perfect fit for your size. Please follow these steps below.
Step 1 wrap a measuring tape gently around your head, find the largest circumference, and write down the number on a notebook. That’s the size we should match when making a hat.
Step 2 Make a 4×4 in. square swatch in the same pattern (in our Hexagon Hat, the swatch should be in stockinette stitch), using exact the same yarn and needle you’re going to use. Wash and block it, lay flat to dry, then measure the gauge. It’s more important to measure stitch gauge than row gauge. Write down the gauge number. (If you’re not sure how to make a swatch and measure it, please check this post).
Step 3 Now we need to do some simple calculations, if you’re not that into match, please click here, I’ve already made a Google Spread Sheet for this hat project. All you need to do is to enter your head circumference and your gauge numbers into the cell, the Spread Sheet will do all the math for you.
Step 4 Start casting on the number of stitches as recommended by the Spread Sheet.
Step 5 Follow my video to complete this project!
Note:
1. The hat has a 5 inch double rib band, which is elastic to fit your head, so don’t worry if it looks too narrow on the first few rows.
