When you start stepping into the world of hand knitting, garter stitch is perhaps the very first stitch you’ll ever encounter, and it’s the easiest one to learn as well. In flat knitting, when you knit every row, you get garter stitch. Garter stitch is a reversible stitch, meaning it looks exactly the same on the right side and wrong side of the fabric. A garter piece has those lined-up “garter ridges”, so it’s an ideal stitch for thick and warm knitting projects.
GARTER STITCH
(Flat knitting)
Row 1 (RS): Knit all the way across
Row 2 (WS): Turn the piece around and knit across
Repeat RS and WS rows to desired length.
(Circular knitting)
Round 1 (RS): Knit in the first round.
Round 2 (RS): Join the last stitch to the first stitch, then knit in the second round.
Repeat to desired length.
