Make One Left (M1L) is an increasing stitch that leans to the left, it often comes in pairs with M1R (Make One Right) which leans to the right. And they are both called Make One (M1) when the leaning direction is not specifically indicated. M1L creates 2 stitches out of 1, first, you pick up the little bar between two stitches, then you knit in the back loop to add one new stitch. Be careful, it’s very important to knit in the back loop, otherwise you’ll have a big hole out there.

Left-Handed Make One Left (M1L)
In left-handed knitting, it’s a bit tricky to do increasing and decreasing stitches, because some of these stitches are directional, leaning to one direction. A rule of thumb is that, if the stitch is a neutral stitch, then its left-handed version is performed in the same way, if the stitch is directional, then its left-handed version is altered.
