Checkerboard stitch is a common type of stitch that has many variations. You combine seed stitch blocks with stockinette stitch blocks to create a seed checkerboard. In this tutorial, I am going to demonstrate how to knit the 4×5 seed checkerboard.
(Flat knitting)
Cast on a multiple of 8 stitches
Row 1 (RS): (k4, p1, k1, p1, k1) repeat to end
Row 2 (WS): (k1, p1, k1, p1, p4) repeat to end
Row 3 (RS): repeat Row 1
Row 4 (WS): repeat Row 2
Row 5 (RS): repeat Row 1
Row 6 (WS): (p4, p1, k1, p1, k1) repeat to end
Row 7 (RS): (k1, p1, k1, p1, k4) repeat to end
Row 8 (WS): repeat Row 6
Row 9 (RS): repeat Row 7
Row 10 (WS): repeat Row 6
Repeat Row 1-10 to desired length
(Circular knitting)
Cast on a multiple of 8 stitches
Rnd 1 (RS): (k4, p1, k1, p1, k1) repeat to end
Rnd 2 (RS): (k4, k1, p1, k1, p1) repeat to end
Rnd 3 (RS): repeat Rnd 1
Rnd 4 (RS): repeat Rnd 2
Rnd 5 (RS): repeat Rnd 1
Rnd 6 (RS): (p1, k1, p1, k1, k4) repeat to end
Rnd 7 (RS): (k1, p1, k1, p1, k4) repeat to end
Rnd 8 (RS): repeat Rnd 6
Rnd 9 (RS): repeat Rnd 7
Rnd 10 (RS): repeat Rnd 6
Repeat Rnd 1-10 to desired length
