How to Knit a Dishcloth? Video Tutorial for Beginners

Cotton dishcloth

Hi, welcome to KnitwiseGirl.com, in my first blog post, I am going to teach you how to make a simple dishcloth in garter stitch. I’ve uploaded a video on how to make it so please check out below if you want to watch me making this fun little project.

This is a quick and easy project, the reason why I chose garter stitch is because I thought it’s simple and elegant. This is a great project for beginners who want to get the hang of knitting. Those garter bumps are suitable for a dishcloth, because they give you that extra bit of friction when you’re wiping the dishes.

I am using fine weight cotton yarn for the dishcloth, you can also choose super fine cotton yarn (You can find weight info on yarn label). Cotton yarn is a great choice for dishcloth because it is less stretchy and very moisture absorbing. You can use yarn from any brand, as long as it is 100% cotton. I also recommend using mercerized cotton, which is more resistant to abrasion and less liable to shrinkage.

The needles I used for this project are two US size 3 (3.2mm) needles, you can use either single-pointed or double-pointed needles, whichever you prefer.

Now let’s begin making this simple dishcloth. This is a free size project, you don’t have to measure the gauge, just sit back and enjoy the knitting!

In the video tutorial below, you’ll learn how to do long-tail cast on, to work in garter stitch, to bind off, and how to weave in loose ends.
